If you like: "Catan has won countless awards and is one of the most well known board games, enjoyed by both experienced players and those new to unplugged gaming"
Player Count: Competitive for 2-4 players. Note: there is a 5-6 player expansion available.
Complexity Rating: 2 - Mild
Average Playtime: 45-60 Minutes
Setup includes a modular board (or prescribed if it is your first game), where the resource territory hexes are distributed randomly to form the island, surrounded by random oceans where players get access to ports for better trade deals.
The resource territory hexes have number disks (from 1-12) on them and a player generates that resource if they have buildings on the corners of the hexes and the corresponding number is rolled!
- In a players turn:
- They roll the dice, everyone who is eligible collects resource cards based on the roll, unless a 7 is rolled (in which case the current player moves the Robber to a hex of his choice, which blocks all resource generation until the Robber gets moved again)
- They may trade cards at a port (if they have one) and/or trade resource cards with other players and then/or,
- They may spend resource cards for improvements
- Points scoring is contributed by building settlements and cities, building the longest consecutive road, commanding the largest army, or certain development cards that award points (held in secret). First player to 10 points is the winner.
The Settlers of Catan is an absolute classic! Place your starting settlements, farm some wood, lay some bricks, Hurray you have built some roads! You’re mastering agriculture, animal husbandry, woodcutting! Or, overfeed your sheep with wheat then slam them against your ore mines and suddenly you’ve trained an army of knights to pillage your friends, great fun! ...What?
What resources should you position yourself on?
Should I diversify my dice rolls or double-down on a narrower selection.
Should I build roads towards that peninsula to actually trade my damn sheep route or will Bob block me off completely?
Should I just be the “Sheep King” or should I actually try winning?
