" In Mombasa, players acquire shares of chartered companies based in Mombasa, Cape Town, Saint-Louis and Cairo and spread their trading posts throughout the African continent in order to earn the most money. Chartered companies were associations formed for the purpose of exploration, trade and colonization, which links them inextricably to a very dark chapter in human history: global colonialism. This period lasted roughly from the 15th century to the middle of the 20th century and is associated with exploitation and slavery. "

Mombasa features a unique, rotating-display hand-mechanism that drives game play. Each round players choose action cards from their hand, then reveal them simultaneously and carry out the actions. These cards are then placed in a discard pile, and the previously played cards recovered for the subsequent round.

The game is played over 7 rounds, each with three phases:

  • Each player places a card face-down in any number of their action slots simultaneously
  • After doing so, all cards are then turned face-up simultaneously

Beginning with the starting player and proceeding clockwise, each player must take one of six available actions:

  1. Use one or more good cards (pick any number of cards from one good from those available and buy a card and or advance a company track)
  2. Use ALL available expansion cards
  3. Use one bookkeeper
  4. Use one diamond merchant
  5. Place one bonus marker
  6. Passing

  • Moving tokens from round tracker to book display
  • Moving action cards and refilling
  • Taking back bonus markers and tiles played

End of Game

After 7 rounds have passed, the game ends and each player is scored:

  • 1 pound = 1 point
  • For each company: look at the revealed coins and you score according to how many coins are revealed per company share
  • Marker on the diamond track
  • Marker on the book track

The Player with the highest score wins.
